5 Gyres Ambassadors Program 

Apply to become a 5 Gyres Ambassador and join a group of exceptional individuals, including scientists, students, explorers, artists, and athletes, who are passionate about a plastic free ocean.  They have become leaders in their community in the fight against plastic pollution, working on 5 Gyres Action Campaigns to inspire and educate communities about plastic pollution and poor product design.  They aim to expand the program internationally and are currently searching for new Ambassadors around the world. Ambassadors are selected based on what they propose to do with the opportunity in their unique geographic location.







Algalita International Youth Summit - Plastic Ocean Pollution Solutions (POPS)

Algalita’s 2016 three-day intensive Youth Summit included  100 youth leaders and teachers from around the globe who received advanced training from experts in leadership, public speaking, community engagement, art, science,and filmmaking to “Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution. The summit took place in Dana Point, CA from February 26 – 28, 2016 to launch and lead action-oriented solutions to reduce plastic waste globally. Check out

Bahamas Plastic Free

Learn about marine debris on beaches and how to turn a beach into one that is plastic free. Includes projects like:

  • Plastic beach project - Studies debris concentration across beaches in Bahamas
  • Marine Debris and ME plastic pollution camp: A 3-5 day summer camp to educate students about marine plastic debris
  • Upcycled: Trains students to think creatively about plastic waste
  • Adopt a school, adopt a beach: a program to bridge the gap between education, research and action in local schools
  • Junior Plastic Warriors: Program to cultivate environmental leadership in students 12 years and up
  • Ambassador program: Students are equipped with tools and experience to stop plastic pollution.





Bahamas Plastic Movement - Plastic Pollution Education

BPM’s mission is to build a community of education and activism around plastic pollution. By empowering Bahamians to contribute to hands on citizen science and environmental leadership, we aim to evolve mindsets and spark cultural practices that will be pivotal in executing changes at the policy level.  They focus on Research, Education, Citizen Science and Policy Change on Grand Eleuthera, the Bahamas.

Summer camp - A 5 day program in which students learn about the rise of the plastics industry and the effect of marine debris on the global marine environment and human health. They participate in the Beach Plastic Project citizen science project to collect data on marine debris on Bahamian beaches, experience beach cleanups, and learn how to repurpose plastics and use art and creativity as a tool for activism.  For ages 9 - 14. Leadership programs:

Ambassadors - Middle School through High School Students - Provide students with tools and experience to take action
and build awareness campaigns on plastic pollution in their community.

Junior Plastic Warriors -  cultivates environmental leadership with children aged 2 - 12 using a unique delivery of plastic
pollution information through song, music, dance and art.

Plastic Beach Project - A first-of-its-kind citizen science project conducting a comparative study assessing plastic debris
concentrations across beaches in South Eleuthera, Bahamas. In the first 2 years, over 350 youth citizen scientists from
schools across Eleuthera, Nassau, and the United States compiled a baseline dataset for plastic pollution data in So. Eleuthera.







Bahamas Youth Summit - June 2015

A 3 day Youth Action Island Summit kicked off the 5 Gyres Institute’s weeklong expedition from Eleuthera to Bermuda to conduct further research on plastic pollution near the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre.  The Island School, Cape Eleuthera Institute, Jack Johnson and All-at-Once partnered with 5 Gyres to bring 75 local Bahamian, U. S., and international students to the Cape Eleuthera Institute to learn about and generate solutions to plastic pollution for island nations.  Stay tuned for future youth summits.  Read more and see a video of their work here

The Bioneers Youth Leadership Program connects young people with a unique mix of innovators, elders and other youth to inspire and support them in authentic engagement and leadership.
